Boeing to install aeronautical maintenance center in the Dominican Republic
Boeing will install a commercial aircraft maintenance center in the Dominican Republic, which will involve an investment of about 200 million dollars in its first ten years, the local partner of the US company said Wednesday.
The maintenance center will be located at the Maria Montez airport in the city of Barahona (southwest) and its construction will begin next March, as announced by the president of FTS Holdings Group, Hahly Pichardo, local Boeing partner, at a press conference in the National Palace, seat of the Dominican Presidency.
The investment will generate between 1,500 and 2,000 direct jobs in its initial stage, although the number “will continue to grow” as internal capacities develop, according to Pichardo.
As indicated by the businessman, a generation of income is expected in the region and for the country of between 50 and 100 million dollars in the first ten years of activity of the center, which “is conceived as a project of constant expansion” and has contemplated the recruitment of other companies that could be installed at the airfield.
The facilities will constitute a free zone, an industrial area that benefits from tax exemptions and a special labor regime, giving the possibility for other companies to implant in the place.
The manager explained that high-skilled jobs will be generated, as well as workers in the sector of lateria, painting or sewing, who will be given specific training by the requirements of this industry.
The Boeing to install aeronautical maintenance center in the Dominican Republic center will carry out the technical inspections and maintenance operations on commercial airplanes, mainly “narrow body”, the type of device that operates in this region, explained the person in charge.
The manager pointed out among the conjugated factors that have led the aeronautical giant to implement this resource in Dominican territory the contract signed with Aerodom, a concessionaire of the María Montez airport, as well as the facilities granted by the Government and the aviation authorities of the country.
“Thanks to the climate of growth and economic stability offered by the Dominican Republic we have managed to attract the attention of the most important manufacturer in the global aeronautical field, such as Boeing,” which sees the country “as a stable entity that provides the necessary conditions” to bring the aviation industry, “which is non-existent in the region” until now.
