Traveling to Las Terrenas by Airplane

Getting to Las Terrenas has been easier since an airport opened nearby

At one time, tourists would have to fly to Santo Domingo then drive for three or more hours to get to their accommodations in Las Terrenas. Then, in November of 2006, an airport in the El Catey Village of Samana opened offering both domestic and a small amount of international air travel, taking the ground commute from the nearest airport down to just 30 minutes.

About Samaná El Catey International Airport

The Samana El Catey International Airport (AZS) features an asphalt runway that stretches 9,813 feet long, and a terminal capable holding four Boeing 747s at one time. Not in the top running as busiest airport on the island, welcoming just around 100 thousand passengers a year, it is still a great option for tourists visiting Las Terrenas who want to avoid the long drive from Santo Domingo. Most of the air traffic here is with domestic airlines, there are direct flights available on a regular basis from New York City.

Flying to Las Terrenas from the US

Jet Blue is currently the only airline offering direct flights from the United States. They travel from the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, which means those in the area can fly direct, while others will have to plan a connection.

A Note About El Portillo Airstrip

At one time, there was an operating air strip located directly in Las Terrenas city limits. Although not a large airport by any stretch of the imagination, it was possible to hire small charters to get you to the airport from elsewhere in the Dominican Republic. It was put to significant use when the earthquake devastated Haiti in 2010, but by the beginning of 2012 the airstrip ceased to be operational. It is possible that we will see it welcome flights again in the future, so make sure to check directly before you visit Las Terrenas.

Next Stop, Las Terrenas

Upon your arrival at El Catey, you can rent a car and drive northeast, mainly along DO-133 for 30 minutes and with a toll of 482 pesos which is about $11(USD). You can rent a car from the airport for between $30 and $120(USD) per day. If you don’t want to rent, air conditioned taxis cost $85(USD) for four passengers.

Tourists who are flying to Las Américas International Airport in Santo Domingo but don’t want to pay for a domestic flight to El Catey might consider taking the bus, or guaguas from the capital city for less than $10(USD). Buses leave every day about once an hour between 7:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

When it comes to flying to Las Terrenas, there are several option to choose from. This means you’ll have a few decisions to make, but convenience, time, and cost will all join together to help you see which will end up being the right choice for your getaway.
