Great things to do in Las Terrenas Dominican Republic

Located on the northeastern coast of the Samana Peninsula, Las Terrenas offers miles of protected inshore waters and beautiful, undeveloped white-sand-beaches, lined with tall palm trees and pastel-colored fishing boats. Trade winds and the warm temperature of the sub-tropical Atlantic Ocean bring this part of the island year-round balmy weather. With a year-round average of 77 degrees Fahrenheit, the temperatures vary only 18 degrees between summer and winter.
No longer a rustic fishing village, today Las Terrenas is a cosmopolitan town and seems as much French (approaching a colony) and Italian as Dominican. Fashionable-looking European women in designer sunglasses ride their personal ATVs with a bag of baguettes in tow, battling on roads with way too many motos. It’s a balancing act between locals and expats – one that has produced a lively mix of styles and a social scene more vibrant than anywhere else on the peninsula. Either way you walk along the beach road leads you to a beachfront scattered with hotels, high palm trees and calm aquamarine waters.

Like Las Galeras, Las Terrenes is independent-traveler-friendly and a good place to hook up with fellow nomads.

Las Terrenas is a town in the Samaná province of the Dominican Republic.
Samana was a famous slave trade port for the British in the early 17th century. Today, the people of this province are a mix of Taino, Spanish and African descent. The name is derived from the French phrase “la terriene” (the landowner).[3]
Las Terrenas is a new hotspot for foreigners and people from the Capital, Santo Domingo (SD). Since the completion of the new highway between Santo Domingo and Samaná, people from SD have started to come more frequently. The drive takes 2 hours from the center of Las Terrenas to the center of Santo Domingo. Also, the new airport El Catey is open for international flights, mainly used for connections to Europe and Canada. JetBlue started 2 flights a week non-stop from New York in 2012.
In the 2012 census, the town had a population of 10,865.
As of March 2012 the new highway portion between El Catey and Las Terrenas is also completed. In fact, all the roads are now asphalted.
Developments[edit]

Las Terrenas developed a new aqueduct which is ready and working as of 2013. Additionally, March 2012 saw a new fiber optic internet/tv/telephone system installed which has progressively improved communications and network connection.
