What is now the Alcazar de Colón museum, started as a 55 rooms castle built in 1511 as the palace of Diego Colón son of Cristobal Colón.
Abandoned in 1770 and turned into ruins by 1835, the building was renovated and reopened to the public as a museum in 1957 and was declared a National Monument. Today the museum’s 22 rooms display furniture and artifacts from the time of Colón, bringing you back to the 16th century.
This museum sits on the large open square called “Plaza España” known for its collection of great restaurants. Sit down on one of the many open patios for a cocktail or a nice dinner and enjoy the backdrop of the glowing Alcazar across the plaza. It’s memorable.
