The Catedral Metropolitana Santa María de la Encarnación was consecrated by Pope Julius II in 1504 and built from 1514 to 1546.The church combines multiple styles, including a baroque altar, a gothic ceiling, a plateresque limestone façade and twelve renaissance chapels, one for each Apostle. The remains of Cristobal Colón were held here for many years before being moved to the Faro Colón where they now rest.Sitting in la Plaza Colón in the heart of the Zona Colonial, the cathedral stands out as the most significant structure in the area. You can appreciate its beauty while feeding pigeons in the plaza or enjoying a coffee or a drink from one of the open patios across the way.

A Yahoo! Travel writer says: “What a remarkable landmark and jewel of the church. It’s a peaceful, beautiful, stimulating place where the human just for a second almost can sense the presence of God.” One Virtual Tourist offers this helpful tip: “NO ONE may enter in shorts or tank tops. More than that, women may not be allowed in if they are in pants. Luckily, one of the gift shops nearby … will rent skirts for RD $50.”

Showcasing elements of Gothic, Baroque and plateresque architectural styles, the Catedral Primada de América still holds Sunday afternoon mass. If you’re not interested in services, plan your visit from sometime between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. There’s disputed information on whether this church is free to tour, so bring at least 80 Dominican pesos (or about $2 USD) to cover a possible entry fee.

The first Cathedral of the New World Santo Domingo  is a must see for any visitor to the Dominican Republic
